Residence Permit Guide for Foreigners

Published: April 29, 2026

Short Answer

A residence permit (居留许可, jūliú xǔkě) is required for foreigners staying in China for more than 180 days. It replaces your visa and allows you to live and work (if applicable) in China legally. The permit is tied to your purpose of stay -- work, study, family reunion, or personal affairs. You must apply within 30 days of entry at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB), and renewals should be done 30 days before expiration.

Deep Dive

What is a Residence Permit?

A residence permit is a sticker placed in your passport that allows you to stay in China for an extended period. It is different from a visa:
  • Visa: Allows you to enter China and stay for a limited time
  • Residence permit: Allows you to live in China for 1-5 years and typically allows multiple entries
The residence permit is required for anyone staying in China for more than 180 days, including workers, students, family members, and long-term visitors.

Types of Residence Permits

Work Residence Permit:
  • For foreigners with a valid work permit
  • Duration: 1-2 years (can be longer for Category A talent)
