China Climate Guide by Region

Published: April 29, 2026

Short Answer

China spans multiple climate zones, from subarctic winters in the northeast to tropical heat in the south. The north is cold and dry in winter, the south is warm and humid year-round, and the interior has extreme seasonal swings. Packing and preparation depend entirely on where you will live.

Deep Dive

The North (Beijing, Harbin, Dalian, Tianjin)

Climate type: Continental with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers
  • Winter (Nov-Mar): Temperatures drop to -10C to -20C in Harbin, -5C to -10C in Beijing. Dry air, occasional snow. Central heating runs from mid-November to mid-March
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Hot and humid. Beijing regularly hits 35-40C. Brief but intense rainstorms
  • Spring/Autumn: Short and pleasant. Best time to visit
What to pack: Heavy winter coat, thermal underwear, warm hat and gloves, humidifier (the dry winter air causes skin and respiratory issues), summer clothes for the hot months
Key issue: The heating line (Qinling-Huaihe line) determines whether buildings have central heating. North of this line, buildings are heated. South of it, they are not -- which makes southern winters feel surprisingly cold indoors.

The East Coast (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing)

Climate type: Humid subtropical
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Temperatures around 0-10C. No central heating in most buildings. Damp cold that penetrates clothing. Overcast skies for weeks
  • Summer (Jun-Sep): Hot and very humid. 35-40C with high humidity. "Sauna weather" is the local description
  • Plum rain season (Meiyu): June to mid-July. Persistent drizzle and fog. Everything feels damp. Mold is a real problem
  • Typhoon season: Late summer. Occasional typhoons bring heavy rain and wind
What to pack: Layers for winter (no central heating means you need warm indoor clothes), dehumidifier or moisture absorbers, rain gear, breathable summer clothing

The South (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong)

Climate type: Tropical/subtropical
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Mild, 10-20C. Occasionally cold snaps drop temperatures to 5C. No heating
  • Summer (Apr-Oct): Long, hot, and extremely humid. 30-38C with near-constant humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are common
  • Rainy season: April to September. Heavy downpours
  • Typhoon season: July to October. Shenzhen and Hong Kong are directly in the typhoon belt
What to pack: Light, breathable clothing year-round. Rain jacket. Umbrella always. Light layers for the few cold days. Air conditioning is essential.

The Southwest (Chengdu, Kunming, Chongqing)

Climate type: Varies by city
  • Chengdu: Mild and overcast. Rarely sunny. Winters are damp and cold (5-10C) without heating. Summers are hot and humid
  • Kunming: "Spring City" -- mild year-round (15-25C). One of China's most pleasant climates. Dry season (Nov-Apr) and wet season (May-Oct)
  • Chongqing: One of China's "furnace cities." Extremely hot summers (35-45C). Damp, chilly winters
What to pack: For Chengdu, layers and a dehumidifier. For Kunming, light jacket for evenings. For Chongqing, extreme summer heat preparation

The Northwest (Xi'an, Urumqi, Dunhuang)

Climate type: Arid continental
  • Winter: Cold and dry. Urumqi drops to -20C or lower
  • Summer: Hot and dry. Xi'an hits 40C. Very little humidity
  • Sandstorms: Spring sandstorms in desert regions
  • Large temperature swings: Daily temperature differences of 15-20C are normal
What to pack: Heavy winter gear, sandstorm protection (masks, goggles for desert areas), sunscreen, lots of water

The Northeast (Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang)

Climate type: Subarctic/continental
  • Winter: Brutally cold. -20C to -35C. Heavy snow. Harbin's Ice Festival draws tourists despite the cold
  • Summer: Short but pleasant. 20-30C. Green and beautiful
  • Central heating: Runs from October to April in some cities
What to pack: Extreme winter gear -- down jacket, thermal layers, insulated boots, hand warmers. Summer clothes for the brief warm season

The Tibet Plateau (Lhasa, Shigatse)

Climate type: Highland/plateau
  • Year-round: Intense UV radiation, thin air, large day-night temperature swings
  • Summer: Warm days (20-25C), cool nights (5-10C)
  • Winter: Cold but sunny. -5C to -15C
  • Rainy season: July to August
What to pack: Sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, warm layers, altitude sickness medication

General Packing Advice for China

  • Layer system works everywhere
  • Air conditioning is widespread but heating south of the Qinling-Huaihe line is not
  • Dehumidifiers are essential in the south and east coast
  • Humidifiers are essential in the north
  • Quality shoes -- Chinese cities involve a lot of walking
  • Sun protection -- UV is strong across most of China
